Holy Rosary Secondary School Ihioma was founded in the 1958, the school was founded by the catholic archdiocese of Owerri, under the auspices of the Holy Rosary sisters in conjunction with the Ihioma community under the leadership of Rev Sr Mary Aloysuis.
It started with thirty students as a secondary school for girls only. The first principal of the school was Rev Sr Mary Ignatius Ioyola, an Irish Missionary. The school took its first West African School Certificate Examination in December 1962. The then East central state government took over the schools belonging to the voluntary agencies and private individuals;
As a result of this the school’s name was changed from Holy Rosary Secondary School Ihioma to Girls Secondary School Ihioma.
In 1983 the school clocked 25 years and a commemorative almanac was launched under the principalship of late Mrs M.C Onukogu
In 1983 the community primary school adjacent to Girls Secondary School Ihioma was transferred to their second campus where the P.T.A of Ihioma Girls Secondary school built an 8 classroom block for them. The old Community primary school premise was then annexed to G.S.S.I thereby expanding the secondary school compound.
In 1985, the school was elevated to the status of model secondary School , a status it has maintained till date.
